Floriane Magera recognized for her outstanding contributions to the industry at the RISE awards 2022

Dec. 1, 2022 - Floriane Magera, Innovation Engineer at EVS, has received the Product Innovation award by RISE during a ceremony hosted by BT Sport and Timeline in London on November 30th. This award celebrates her many achievements and recognizes her outstanding contribution to the industry, especially through her pioneering work in the field of artificial intelligence applied to live video production.

RISE this year received over 250 nominations from over 10 countries, of companies, women and men across a variety of roles, including Business, R&D Engineer, Production Support Engineer, Product Innovation, Marketer/PR, Rising Star, Sales and Technical Operations.

Floriane Magera said: "I'm deeply honored to receive this award. The broadcast industry is striving to improve in terms of diversity and inclusion and I am thrilled to become part of that journey. It's amazing to get such a recognition for my work that I could not have achieved outside of EVS safe and stimulating work environment or without the help of my brilliant colleagues".

EVS' CEO, Serge Van Herck also commented on the win: "I am so proud of the recognition Floriane has received from Rise with this product innovation award during the Rise Award event in London. It is truly well deserved. She is a great contributor to our Innovation Team at EVS. And it's not only about her technical skills but also about her positive attitude and 'can do' mentality. She really moves boundaries. I trust she will inspire many other women and girls to select a technology career in the broadcast industry."

Bringing Artificial Intelligence into live production

Since joining EVS in 2016, Floriane has played a key role in the development of AI-based products that help bridge the gap between scientific research and real-world solutions used to produce live content. Over the years, her work has been key to all the stages of the making of working prototypes, ranging from ideation, technology selection, neural network design, software architecture and ultimately to implementation within customer infrastructures.

Under the leadership of Olivier Barnich, Head of Innovation at EVS, Floriane and her team have developed an augmented reality technology that enabled EVS to become one of the first equipment provider to have a FIFA-certified virtual offside line technology. The technology is part of EVS' iconic Xeebra VAR system, which is currently being used on major sports events worldwide.  She has also contributed widely to the design of XtraMotion, EVS' cloud-enabled, AI-based service which allows the transformation of any camera angle into super slow-motion replays. Since the launch, the service has won several awards, and is used on a wide range of sports to enhance the live storytelling.

Sharing her passion with the wider community

Floriane holds a master's degree in computer science from the University of Liège and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. whilst being employed full-time at EVS, fostering contacts with universities working on related topics.

She is also part of SoccerNet, a group of international scientists who maintain a dataset and organize yearly competitions for different tasks such as action recognition, player tracking, and camera calibration, to stimulate research on sports image analysis. This group is considered a driving force for the research on the automatic interpretation of sports content using artificial intelligence.

Floriane is well aware of the lack of diversity in the broadcasting sector and in IT in general. That is why, in her spare time, she is a volunteer at WomentDotCode, a support group for female coders in Belgium.

She is very enthusiastic in is happy to share her work and experience at presentations across the country to raise awareness of EVS, which is looking to recruit at colleges and universities. Doing so, she hopes to show Belgian female students that they belong in IT and that they can find support if needed.

Similarly, her doctoral research gives her the opportunity to present her work at various international scientific conferences (NVIDIA GTC, CVSports workshop of IEEE CVPR, NAIS, etc.), hoping to constitute a female model in her field.
