NILES, IL, October 3, 2008 — Open to university and college students nationwide, the registration for Shure's fifth annual "Fantastic Scholastic" recording competition will remain open until October 17, 2008. A random drawing on or about October 22, 2008, will determine the ten competing schools, each of which will receive a standardized "mic locker" from Shure that must be used to complete every recording project submitted.
The names of registrants chosen as contestants in the random drawing will be posted on Shure's website on or around October 24, 2008. Dedicated mic lockers will then be sent out and must be returned no later than February 2, 2009. Announcement of the Grand Prize, Runner-Up, and Honorable Mention Prize winners will take place on or around April 10, 2009.
Competing teams from each school are required to record and mix an original piece of music. Their submission will be judged by a panel of industry professionals who will evaluate the recordings based upon their overall fidelity, clarity, sonic balance, and creativity in selection and placement of the microphones. Previous judges have included Dave Hewitt, Joe Barresi, Mike Fraser, Elliott Scheiner, and Al Schmitt.
"When we first started this contest four years ago, I don’t think any of us really knew what we were in for," said Shure Market Development Specialist Dave Mendez, the contest coordinator. "The response from the students, faculty, and our judges has been overwhelmingly positive and we’ve seen significant growth and interest in the contest from year to year. We’re thrilled to be able to reward more schools by adding more prizes. This contest is a great way for us to support students and teachers of recording education, and we’re looking forward to another successful competition in 2009."
